We set out as somewhat starry-eyed artists, wanting to make beautiful pieces that anyone and everyone would love to buy... but when we actually start selling art it can be a shock to discover that not all prospective buyers appreciate the value of the work. Michele recalls the icky feeling of having someone at an open studios try to haggle for the lowest price on a piece. And we've all had those requests for an extra 'friends and family' discount that can feel a bit deflating. It can be hurtful and confusing—why don't buyers value our work?
This is a complex topic to unpack, but the first step could be understanding that there are actually a wide range of art markets (that is, many different types of art buyers who have different purchasing needs and motivations) available to us. And we may not even realise in which art market we are selling...
